Supreme Court order on Kolkata top cop: Mamata Banerjee, BJP claim moral victory

“moral victory” was how Mamata Banerjee described a Supreme Court order requiring Kolkata’s top cop to cooperate with an investigation of chit fund scams — while placing a bar on his arrest.

But soon after the Supreme Court instructed Rajeev Kumar, the Kolkata Police commissioner, to appear before the CBI, the government said the ruling was a win for central investigators.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the order was a “great moral victory” for the CBI, which tried without success to question Rajeev Kumar at his home in Kolkata on Sunday.

What happened instead was this: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to the police officer’s home, accused the Centre of attempting a “coup”, and began a protest that has received nearly unanimous support from the Opposition.
